在（美国/中国）的生活是什么样的？What's it like to live in (USA/China)?

他跟我说在中国的生活是什么样的，我也跟他说了美国的生活是什么样的。"He told me what it was like to live in China, and I told him what it is like to live in the US."

This would be opposed to 他跟我说中国人的生活是什么样的 which would sort of imply that he was a Chinese person or a Chinese expert. The first one (above) could be two Americans talking, or two other nationalities, it's not specific. I figured since the English wasn't entirely specific (taken out of context), then the Chinese shouldn't be specific either?
